WHITE
KNIGHT

The K11 Micra has been a cult car in Japan and UK for at least
10 years due to its brisk performance, good handling and cheap
price . The very dedicated band of followers is rapidly growing in
Australia micra.com.au .
At first glance this innocent looking Micra is in nice
condition, but has no hint of being anything but a tidy well kept
vehicle. David (the owner) wanted it to be clean looking but also
something different and surprising. As in real life, what you see
on the outside gives no hint of the sophistication under the
skin. David gave in to his dark side when it came to engine
development and now this car has
2.5 times the stock power output at the wheels!

No
claims are made for performance, which is described as
"adequate". These cars are often called
sleepers or "Q" ships. Q ships were heavily armed
vessels used in World war 2 that were made to look innocent
freighters till they came up to their target J.
The CG13 DE engine is supercharged and has a front mount
intercooler. The forged pistons*
used in the engine have ceramic coated crowns and friction
modified skirts. This is the same technology as used in the V8 Supercar
team engines. The pistons are fitted with ductile iron top and
gapless second rings*. Billet 4140 con rods*
with ARP rod bolts and cap dowels are used. The block had to be
relieved for rod clearance.
The supercharger is a Toyota SC12 unit. It uses a custom sized alloy crank pulley*
that gives a 50% overdrive speed. The cylinder head was ported and has special grind cams*
designed for supercharging. Custom large bore headers are fitted. Fuel and
ignition are controlled by an Autronic SMC*
auto tune ECU. Cooling is via a custom alloy radiator*
with greatly increased cooling capacity.
The flywheel* is alloy,
fitted with a custom 3 puck clutch*.
A larger gearbox* from
another Nissan was needed to get over the problem of stock
gearboxes shredding 2nd gear. The gearbox bell housing was
modified to suit the micra engine. A special starter*
had to be used with an adapter plate to suit the differing
flywheel offset and starter position. Another advantage of the
larger gearbox was a taller final drive ratio.
The suspension and braking has been upgraded to suit the
increase in power. Koni externally adjustable*
shocks are used front and rear with a full Whiteline kit for bars
and K Mac springs.
This micra has had a 2 year development program. Datrats are
proud to have been a part of this program. We supplied the
engine, gearbox and all parts marked with the red asterisk. *
Laurie at Rotech in Devonport put it all together and made it
work. The car is complete and requires no further work
except being driven. It is very easy to drive and as a result
David's wife regularly drives the car to work as a change from her
turbocharged micra. |
